Horror Movie.

Horror movies shot in Asia do well in DVD sales or in certain cinephile circles globally.  Vietnam is no exception.  I'll have to follow up with this to see how or if the 550 plus boards were used in the production of the film.  Photoshop was utilized in the creation of the key frames with dialogue breaks for the director to follow the audio portion as well.

Another Prop.

I like designing models for animated shows.  Besides storyboarding, it's a challenge and a pleasure.  This was from the X-Men Evolution series that ended in 2005.

Greeting Card!

Greeting cards are a fun excuse to break out the paints and make personalized traditional art.  In this case, gouache paint on 5 x 6 inch watercolor paper was enough inspiration for a Father's Day card.

Drink & Draw Style!

Careful not to label a "style" that's been copyrighted, I've admired the look and its effect on a page.  I used recycled paper for this drawing.  First, the pencil, then the ink, the whiteout pen, and finally, the Prismacolor pencil to blend.

Thumbnail Sketches.

These storyboard thumbnail sketches are drawn in approximately 1" x 2 1/4" size frames.  I was just experimenting with action sequences and needed more action boards in my portfolio.  Photoshop added the tone over the pencil drawings.  I'll continue the sequence at a later date.

Assembly Line.

I did a couple of drawings dealing with robots & assembly lines awhile back.  They were done in black and white with pen & ink and later with Photoshop added to punch up contrast.  I used the same interiors for a Lotus Elise car ad later.

An Old Painting on Canson!

Painting on paper presents the challenge of using less water to avoid warping.  I did this in my final year in art school to do a more opaque application process.  I loved the challenge of it.  And to test my colour theory knowledge.

Acrylic On Canvas Board.

The first Sunday of every month there's Life Painting at Paintlab in Santa Monica.  Approximately 10 x 14 inches, the painting was part of a 3 hour session.  I managed to block in the form in that time.  I added some gradient effects, adjusted curves & contrast, increased hue saturation, and added warm highlights in Photoshop later.

Target Market!

Advertising regularly target their audience with enticing deals specifically designed for their market.  With MoneyGram, for instance, international currency can easily be exchanged at popular mega-stores.  This commercial shows the fictitious exchange of Chinese currency in the old world.

Design & Story.

More artwork for the movie production.  I'm into the process of creating a technique to match the project or even the piece itself.  The only problem being inconsistency in illustration style.  I hope that the design & story emphasis is not lost because of this.

Paint Sketches.

I may replace these images because the person is identifiable in the comprehensives.  I'll be doing more colour sketches in the near future.  The same mindset of traditional paintings apply here.  Anyway, here they are!

Pre-production Art.

Artwork that depicts the look and design of the final motion picture are generally considered pre-production art. Nothing much to say here other than it was fun to work in color!

Music Videos.

Music videos are great launching pads for new filmmakers to show off their signature flair.  Guerilla-style directors emerge from the industry to later work on films.  In my opinion, the smart ones plan ahead in order to save money & time by means of hiring storyboard artists. The boards are used as key scenes, then the director embellishes the details, and, in this case, edits the final cut. I must add, this was easy because the director already had talent to begin with.

Abduction!

As part of a teaser pitch, sometimes it takes more than still images, as presented here, in order to reach producers, studios, and distributors alike.  These still images are a segment of a treatment written by an actor/ friend.  Drawn, scanned, and Photoshopped, it was eventually used in an animatic.

Food Products.

Painting food in advertising is a challenge considering the guidelines. The guidelines being; that they look fresh, colorful, & appetizing. I don't know if I captured it but it was sure fun when I painted it back in '92. The acrylic painting was inspired by the quirky illustrations of Barry Jackson.
